Following attending a Global Learning Programme (GLP) led British Values CPD course, Kingston Park Primary School is delighted to have become one of only two schools in Newcastle to become an expert training centre.

The GLP is a government funded programme seeking to create a national network of like-minded schools, committed to equipping their pupils to succeed in a globalised world by helping their teachers to deliver effective teaching and learning about development and global issues at key stages 2 and 3 (although it can also be tailored to key stage 1 and EYFS).

By giving schools the tools to embed global learning into teaching across the curriculum, the GLP is helping schools to:

• Meet OFSTED requirements;
• Promote SMSC;
• Prepare pupils for modern life in Britain by promoting values such as empathy, fairness and respect;
• Develop and enhance enquiry and critical thinking linked to a mastery curriculum;
• Improve pupil engagement;
• Deepen curriculum knowledge and understanding;
• Expand global awareness;
• Strengthen school ethos and values;
• Support teacher professional development.

Our Curriculum Initiative TLR 2, Mrs Young, attended a 2 day training course in Warwick from 11th – 13th January 2017. Following this training, Mrs Young sought to build a network of local schools (including the 7 trust schools, Kenton High School) and through a series of free CPD sessions, has supported 16 schools throughout Newcastle, Northumberland and Gateshead to develop the skills to deliver teaching and learning about global learning issues across the curriculum.

Becoming an expert centre has brought several great benefits to Kingston Park:

• Access to free training for our Global Learning expert (Mrs Young), which has been disseminated to all staff.
• £5000 worth of government funding to support teaching and learning.
• An additional £500 of e-credits awarded to each school, which can be redeemed against any of the GLP approved CPD providers.
• A self-evaluation tool that provides a personalised action plan.
• Curriculum and subject specific guidance.
• An abundance of free online resources.
• Strengthening links across the trust and new meaningful links with new schools.
• All pupils are receiving expert teaching and learning the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in our current and future globalised world. 
• All pupils have a greater understanding of a range of cultures and how interdependence plays a very important role in the survival of most nations around the world.
