Curriculum Overview
A child is not a vessel to be filled but a lamp to be lit.' Hebrew Proverb
All children at Kingston Park Primary School receive a relevant, stimulating, balanced curriculum, which, where appropriate, is carefully scaffolded or adapted to meet each individual child’s needs. It embraces equality, diversity and inclusion. Although each subject is taught and referred to discretely, each term, every year group starts a new topic theme to provide additional context and stimulus for our children, making links to our local area when and where appropriate (see 'Curriculum Overview').
Marvellous Me
During September, all children study a separate area of study linked to PSHE. This is our 'Marvellous Me' topic (see 'Marvellous Me Whole School Overview').
Inspiration Days
We believe that the curriculum should be as exciting and stimulating as possible so each new topic is introduced with an 'Inspiration Day' to provide a memorable learning experience.
Enrichment Weeks
To further enhance our curriculum offer, we provide two separate enrichment weeks. Both are themed around personal development and our Golden Threads. The first, in January, focuses upon self-reflection, values and goals. The second, in July, has Careers and Enterprise as the main focus.
Commando Joe's
We use Commando Joe's to supplement our curriculum offer still further. These are a series of themed missions for children to display their skills, creativity and teamwork to solve a number of problems centred around the idea of RESPECT. We teach these discretely three times throughout the year during the Marvellous Me Topic and both Enrichment Weeks. For further information around Commando Joe's, please visit their website commandojoes.co.uk
Personal Development
At Kingston Park, we are proud that our children have the opportunity to enhance their personal development through achieving one or more of our phased KPPS Enrichment Awards (see below). Each phased award contains a series of 20 personal development related activities designed to be completed at school or home for children to complete in order to attain their bespoke certificate and badge. Introduced in 2024 via a video address from our patron of the award, Paralympian rower Grace Clough MBE.
Know More, Do More, Remember More
It is important that our children retain and remember the curriculum content rather than simply their memorable learning experiences. Therefore, we promote a love of learning by encouraging oracy and metacognition whilst regularly returning to prior learning to ensure the children are able to make connections with and between their previous and new learning, resulting in our children being able to know more, do more and remember more.
Quality First Teaching
All our children are taught in mixed ability classes. The children are taught as a whole class but may also work with adults in smaller groups or individually. Teachers utilise a range of teaching approaches so that all children are actively involved and challenged to be the best they can be in every lesson.
