Design Technology
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works ~ Steve Jobs.
At Kingston Park Primary School, we see Design and Technology as a vital subject within the curriculum as it prepares students to navigate a world characterized by constant change and innovation. Through the use of ’Projects on a Page’ from the Design and Technology Association, we equip students with the knowledge, skills and mindset to become informed, creative problem solvers and responsible global citizens. At its core, Design and Technology at Kingston Park encourages students to conceive, design and implement solutions to real-world problems while fostering an appreciation for aesthetics and sustainability.
We deliver a high-quality, broad and balanced Design and Technology curriculum by:
1. Fostering Creativity: At Kingston Park, we encourage creativity and innovate thinking. We provide students with the freedom to explore their imagination and develop practical solutions to a wide array of challenges.
2. Real-World Relevance: We bridge the gap between theory and practice by engaging students in hands-on, project based learning. It enables them to see the tangible results of their efforts and real-world applications of their knowledge.
3. Problem-Solving Skills: Through our Design and Technology curriculum, we teach critical problem-solving skills. Students learn to identify, problems, analyse them, and develop practical solutions through the application of design thinking and technical expertise.
4. Technological Literacy: Our students are living in an increasingly technology-driven world. Our curriculum ensures that students are technologically literate. They gain proficiency in using tools, materials, and digital technologies effectively and responsibly.
5. Innovation and Entrepreneurship: We nurture an entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging students to create and innovate. It empowers them to develop and market their inventions and solutions, contributing to economic growth.
6. Sustainability Focus: Our curriculum promotes sustainability by teaching students to consider the environmental and ethical implications of their designs. This fosters a sense of responsibility towards the planet and future generations.
7. Cross-Disciplinary Skills: We integrate concepts from various disciplines, including science, mathematics, engineering and art. It encourages students to think holistically and draw from multiple fields of knowledge.
8. Preparation for Future Careers: We prepare students for a wide range of careers, including engineering, architecture, product design, graphic design, and more. It equips them with the skills and adaptability needed for rapidly evolving industries.
We believe Design and Technology is not just a subject; it is a framework for learning and problem-solving that extends far beyond the classroom. It fosters a lifelong passion for inquiry, innovation, and discovery. By emphasising both creativity and practicality, it empowers students to become engaged, informed and ethical contributors to an ever-changing world. In essence, Design and Technology education equips students with the tools to shape their future and positively impact society, making it an indispensable component of a well-rounded education.
