Design Technology

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works ~ Steve Jobs.

At Kingston Park we aim to nurture children’s creative, innovative, and imaginative thinking through a broad range of inspiring and practical projects. Children will have opportunities to work both independently and in a group, to design and make products for a range of purposes and audiences. Children will spend time evaluating past and present design and technology and they will develop an understanding, and opinion, of its impact on daily life and the wider world. In turn, children will become more receptive and observant of their surroundings and we hope to inspire children to go on to design and make products to impact positively on future generations. This subject has strong links to Science, Art, and Food Technology, and Design and Technology is embedded into the topic based style of teaching in all year groups throughout the school.

At Kingston Park the overarching aim is for children to become fluent and confident in the designing, making and evaluating process whilst developing their technical knowledge. Children will have opportunities to:

- Design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria.
- Select from and use a wide range of tools, equipment, materials and components to perform practical tasks.
- Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable.
- Apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures.
- Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products.
- Investigate and analyse a range of existing products.
- Explore, understand and use mechanical and electrical systems.
- To develop an awareness of the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes.
- Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

At Kingston Park children will be able to select and use a range of textiles and materials to suit a specific design purpose. Children will also have the opportunity to work with mechanical tools and equipment such as gears and pulleys, and electrical circuit components such as motors and buzzers. Children will have access to the school kitchen workshop where they will have the space and resources to prepare and cook dishes. Children will also have the opportunity to help cultivate the outdoor garden where we grow a range of fruit and vegetables including potatoes and strawberries.
